Job Title: Postdoctoral Scholar – NHMFL Applied Superconductivity Center
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Regular/Temporary: Temporary
Full/Part Time: Job ID: 59310
Department
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) - Applied Superconductivity Center
Responsibilities
The ASC is committed to making all-superconducting magnets with ultra-high-field (UHF), high temperature superconducting (HTS) inserts and is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in HTS conductor and magnet development. Four R&D thrusts are driving the efforts at the ASC: UHF magnets (including high homogeneity magnet technology), compact fusion, high energy physics (HEP), and hydrogen power technology. One of the unique capabilities of the ASC is that it maintains a synergistic linkage between materials and material-applications R&D, which enables the understanding of HTS technology from synthesis to record-breaking magnets. Heavily linked throughout the HTS community, the ASC has several collaborations with national and international labs as well as industry. To accelerate reaching its goals, the ASC is seeking a highly motivated candidate who can work flexibly and creatively in a cross-disciplinary team environment for this area:
Development of HTS high field magnet technology based on Bi-2212 strand and cable.
The candidate is expected to boost the efforts of our Bi-2212 magnet R&D team to develop viable technology for mechanically sound and quench protected high field, high-homogeneity magnets with strand as well as high-field magnets using Rutherford cable within the goals of our funding streams. While typical application targets are magnet operation at 4 K, we also intend to investigate perspectives for cryo-cooled systems operating at elevated temperatures. Intermediate field targets of combined LTS-HTS magnet systems will be around 25 T while developing a technological scope for magnets of significantly higher performance of ultimate goals of up to 60 T. The research associate will be involved in conceptual design, modelling, production technology, as well as construction and testing of coils as proof-of-principle in a fast-turn-around R&D loop. Close collaboration and open exchange of information with experts on superconductivity and magnet technology is expected. Collaborations with industry is likely.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will preferably have a PhD in applied-physics, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering, but suitable experience in other disciplines will also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Specific experience in the following areas is preferred:
- Applied superconductivity
- Magnet design and testing
- FEA modeling (Comsol)
- Labview and data acquisition setup
