Job Description
Lead a Landscape Team and trains personnel in the proper use of
equipment, materials/supplies applications and the proper
procedures for use in order to properly maintain the landscape of
the University to present a neat, clean and well-maintained
appearance. Works closely with Landscaping Supervisors and
Leadership to establish priorities, schedules, and quality control
regimens. This will include the performance of grounds maintenance,
operate grounds maintenance equipment such as truck riding and push
mowers, tractors, and small powered equipment. This will also
include horticulture practices such as mowing, planting, litter
removal and other aspects associated with the upkeep of the
landscape of the campus such as irrigation, fertilization,
pesticide application and tree care. This position is designated as
essential personnel for emergency closings.
Type of Recruitment
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Considerable knowledge of proper way to maintain and/or plant trees
shrubs and flowers. Considerable knowledge of the proper way to
trim, spray, mow, remove trash and debris, weed, fertilize, sweep,
rake, cultivate, dig, water, shovel or plow snow, remove ice,
spread salt and/or sand and other related functions. Considerable
knowledge of how to prune different species of shrubs and trees.
Considerable knowledge of the operation of grounds equipment.
Working knowledge of the principles of leadership, including
scheduling and planning work. Working knowledge of pesticides.
Working mechanical knowledge to recognize malfunctions of
equipment. Basic knowledge of insects, diseases, weed
identification, and plant material.
Demonstrated ability to recognize irrigation malfunction.
Demonstrated ability to work in extreme heat or cold; to
lift/move/carry 50 pounds many times per week. Demonstrate the
ability to read and write. Demonstrate ability to work
independently or to work with others.
Special licenses, registration or certification
Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record which must be
maintained. Demonstrate the ability to acquire a valid Pesticide
Technician License within 1 year of employment.

Level and type of experience
Considerable Horticultural experience in garden and landscape
maintenance.
Considerable prior experience using hand tools and operating
related equipment.
Considerable experience scheduling and planning work.
Considerable experience in the operation of grounds
equipment.
Basic experience teaching and coaching others on work
procedures.
Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills,
abilities, education, experience, licensure,
certification)
Certified Nurseryman, Master Gardener, Valid Pesticide Technician
License. Crew Chief certification 1 and 2. On-the-job and/or
Vocational training in Grounds Maintenance.
Conditions of Employment
Full Time, In Person role
Facilities Management employees are considered essential personnel
and subject to working during university closings.
