Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges
and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor
of Sociology. This is a full-time, probationary position within the
Social Science Department and will start on August 18, 2025.
Responsibilities: Faculty members are expected to:
- Demonstrate the ability to teach Sociology courses effectively
to a post-traditional student population and contribute to
meaningful assessment of student learning.
- Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or
research.
- Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
- Contribute to student growth and development through advising
and assistance.
- Engage in service to the university and community.
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by
delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that
support equitable outcomes for all students.
- Provide excellent learning environments through in-person,
online, and/or hybrid course modalities.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of a master’s degree in Sociology, with enrollment in
a doctoral program for fields in which the doctoral degree is the
terminal degree. Doctoral program must be successfully completed
within 5 years to meet the requirement for tenure.
- Demonstrated experience with research and/or teaching in
sociology with a global focus, specifically research and/or
teaching on the global south and/or diaspora.
- Demonstrated ability to teach empirical research methods at the
undergraduate level.
- Demonstrated interest in developing teaching expertise in all
modalities (in-person, online asynchronous, online synchronous,
hybrid, and Hyflex).
- Demonstrated interest in faculty position that prioritizes
teaching and emphasizes teaching excellence.
- A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or
research in the specified discipline(s), or related
disciplines.
- Effective communication skills (written & verbal) to
communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students
and colleagues who are culturally, economically, and linguistically
diverse.
- Specific Technical, Computer, and/or Software skills (as
needed).
Preferred Qualification
- A completed terminal degree in Sociology.
- Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary
level.
- Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary
institution.
- Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at
a post-secondary institution.
- Professional development and/or expertise in culturally
responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal
design.
- Experience as an academic advisor for students at
post-secondary institution.

Description of College/School/Unit: The College of Liberal
Arts, located in St. Paul, MN, consists of programs in humanities,
social sciences, communications, and the arts. These fields
constitute the beating heart of a university education and of a
society committed to socially equitable progress. Liberal Arts
degrees prepare students for success and understanding in
professional, social, and personal pursuits. The exceptional
curricula and caring faculty bring fresh perspectives and expertise
into the classroom on a wide variety of topics and socially

Gender, Historical, and Philosophical Studies; Fine Arts;
Professional Communication; Social Science; Technical Communication

The School/Academic Department: The Social Science
Department faculty are trained as anthropologists, geographers,
political scientists, and sociologists, and the courses we offer
reflect the perspectives of each field. Our department is unique,
however, in offering a strong foundation in interdisciplinary
social science. The interdisciplinary emphasis brings multiple
perspectives to the study of social questions. We also offer
flexibility, enabling students to tailor their major to meet their
individual needs and interests.
Department faculty are award-winning educators, committed to the
intellectual, professional, and civic development of their
students. Dedicated teachers and mentors, the faculty bring both
their academic training and professional experiences from
activities outside the university into their teaching. Outside the
classroom, the social science faculty are dedicated to using their

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience
and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in
the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.
