Description
The University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks a drug development scientist at the level of an Assistant Research Professor with expertise in analytical chemistry and preclinical drug development. The appropriate candidate will be integrated into a team of biologists, chemists and experienced physician-scientists in the general area of pharmacology and drug discovery and development. The primary focus of this individual will be to: (1) work with members of the laboratory team to perform quantitative analysis using mass spectroscopy of novel drugs under development by the team, and (2) to take a lead role in a specific drug development project, guiding the discovery collaboration with chemists and taking responsibility for the appropriate preclinical studies, including but not limited to in vitro cytotoxicity, mechanism of action studies and in vivo assays.
Specifically, the appropriate candidate should have the ability to develop and validate LC/MS and LC/MS/MS methods, generating data for the quantification of small molecule and nanotherapeutics. Additional responsibilities will involve evaluating and troubleshooting analytical methodologies to optimize workflow and assisting with the implementation and assessment of new methodologies for sample analysis, method validation, and analytical troubleshooting.
The candidate will contribute to developing research grant proposals and may pursue independent research funding that complements ongoing research in the laboratory of Dr. Owen A. O’Connor. He/she will be fully integrated into a well-funded (R01, American Cancer Society Research support, major funding through the Translational Orphan Blood Cancer Research Initiative) world-class laboratory conducting state-of-the-art research and drug discovery and development focused on malignant disease. Successful candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by a solid track record of scientific manuscripts and presentations. Career advancement opportunities will be strongly supported, as will independent innovative research proposals. The candidate will report directly to Owen A. O’Connor, M.D., Ph.D. in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematologic Oncology. To apply, please submit a cover letter detailing your skillsets, educational and work experiences along with a CV and three potential referees.
Qualifiations
The appropriate candidate should have at least a Ph.D. or a M.D., Ph.D. with at least 2 years of laboratory experience. Candidates with a M.D. must have a minimum of 4 years of laboratory experience. In addition to being skilled in mass spectroscopy, the ideal candidate will have expertise in routine cell culture, PCR and Western blotting. Experience conducting in vivo studies is considered a benefit.
