We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on an externally-funded project, ‘What must it be like to teach? What young people believe about being a teacher’. The post is available from 1st April 2025 and is full-time for 28 months until July 2027. The project explores how ‘being a teacher’ is constructed by leaving pupils, who have spent the last 13 years in schooling. Using narrative interviews with pupils, the project explores what they believe it is to be a teacher and investigates the assumptions they have developed through being immersed in schools. The analysis will advance conceptualisation of how ‘being a teacher’ is constructed and the ways in which young people are possible future teachers on leaving school.

The successful applicant will conduct relevant literature review and ethics application work; conduct qualitative data collection and data management; liaise with schools; plan and carry out site visits in schools throughout England; and conduct data analysis. They will be expected to contribute to report writing and a range of project outputs aimed at varied audiences.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in relevant subject area and proven knowledge of research techniques and qualitative methodologies in a key field of educational research.

Experience of project management is desirable.
