Join the dynamic team in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center (Explore Center) as a member of the leadership team, leads all initiatives targeting pre-professional students and serves as a liaison between pre-professional advising and professional schools. The Assistant Director assists the Director with overall operations of the Center.
Provides direct supervision for program coordinator and professional academic advisors. Collaborates in hiring and coordination of advisors’ training and professional development plans. Assists in identifying Explore Center goals and priorities. Serves on office leadership team and helps make decisions related to staffing, student situations, and services. Makes unit level recommendations related to student situations and appeals. Serves as a campus resource for all aspects of pre-professional advising of all 19 pre-professional areas and communicates pre-professional student services with students, faculty, and staff. Maintains a thorough knowledge of complex academic program and professional school requirements and academic policy information, including complex inter-institution relationships. Builds and maintains key relationships with faculty and staff at professional schools. Works with UNL departments, UNL faculty, and professional school representatives to confirm prerequisite course plans for pre-health students and maintains accurate guides related to these plans. Serves as the office leader in advising pre-professional students, including reviewing best practices in pre-professional advising, providing, or coordinating continuous training in pre-professional advising, and helping staff work through complex student issues. Provides comprehensive academic advising services to Undeclared, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law students in the Explore Center. Applies individualized and strength-based advising strategies to meet the unique needs of students. Collaborates with the Explore Center team and other campus offices to engage in best practices and to develop programming to aid student retention and success efforts. Assists Explore Center as needed with advising and/or events for prospective UNL students.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Master’s degree plus 3 years of full-time advising experience post-graduation required. Ability to supervise professional staff, advising programs, and processes and contribute to decision making around human and/or fiscal resource allocation necessary. Must have demonstrated ability to critically map and analyze business processes to ensure maximum efficiency and make complex decisions, identify issues, problem solve, resolve and communicate issues and their resolutions with advisors and administrators. Demonstrated ability to research, implement, apply and share advising-related best practices for the College, University and advising community on student development topics essential. Ability to lead training and day-to-day efforts of co-workers around mission critical initiatives required. Must have evidence of working in a fast paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs with verification of working collaboratively within a team environment. Demonstrated ability to work with all student backgrounds necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years of advising experience post-graduation preferred. Experience with resource allocation, strategic planning and program assessment desirable.
