Office of Research Services (ORS) at the University of
Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC)
Job Description
The Office of Research Services (ORS) is a core element of the
university’s research infrastructure. Our mission is to support the
scientific, scholarly, and creative endeavors of the faculty and
staff at UMKC.
The goal of ORS is to function as a highly trained, customer
services-oriented organization whose primary purpose is to support
externally funded research and sponsored activities within the
university community. ORS has responsibility for pre-award and
award administration and is the institutional unit authorized by
the Curators of the University of Missouri to submit proposals to
and accept awards from external entities for financial support in
the form of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.
- Manages pre-award activities for an assigned portfolio of
grants and contracts using knowledge of grant and contract
management rules and regulations, technical expertise, and
analytical skills.
- Manages the daily operations and objectives in support of the
assigned portfolio.
- Contributes information and ideas related to areas of
responsibility as part of a cross functional team.
- Performs pre-award activities for a unit (school, department,
or division) with ORS. Pre-award activities include, but are not
limited to, assisting the department faculty/PI in the development,
preparation, and submission of grant and contract proposals.
- Confers with PI and Pre-award support staff at collaborating
institutions to secure necessary sub-award documents for
proposals.
- Assists the PI in the budget development by proofing the budget
for inconsistencies and ensuring accuracy.
- Reviews budgets for consistency with sponsor, monitors
compliance with agency and University regulations regarding
submission; verifies all financial information to include
application of the appropriate overhead rate for the project.
- Monitors and facilitates proposal process through the routing
process in compliance with university procedures and institutional
signatures. Obtains signatures as needed.
- Monitors proposal status and advises PI on requirements and
deadlines associated with research protection protocols.
- Performs grants and research related training and education for
staff, faculty, and students.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and
experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable
knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
2 years experience in a research administration role preferably in
an academic setting.
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range is $50,000 - $52,000 commensurate with
experience, education, and internal equity.
