Call for applications for 2025/2026 entry
The University of Trento is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for 9 PhD Scholarships in the
PhD programme in Economics and Finance – jointly with the Free University of Bolzano/Bozen
The programme aims to train researchers with solid quantitative and theoretical skills capable of analysing economic and financial phenomena. The theses must be oriented to the maximum scientific rigour and present innovative characteristics that make them publishable in prestigious international journals subject to peer review. The programme is designed to contribute to the international scientific debate on the issues of economics and finance. From this perspective, candidates will be encouraged to use methodologies that reflect the state of the art and adopt a multidisciplinary approach. Particular emphasis will be given to research proposals on the following subjects:
- Economic development and institutions
- Monetary and fiscal policies
- Economic choices and energy transition
- Financial Markets
- Financial risk management
- Enterprises and international markets
- Investment tools and optimisation
- Evaluation of public policies
- Big data
- ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and sustainable finance.
- Market microstructure

PhD Scholarships
The University of Trento, with the aim of also providing financial support to those pursuing a doctoral path, offers scholarships of a higher amount than the one set by the MUR.
Starting from November 1st, 2025 (a.y. 2025/2026), the doctoral scholarships at UniTrento will be increased by over 2,000 euros per year (18,345 euro/year against 16,243 euro/year gross of the "ministerial scholarship").
Please note that the increase in the scholarship amount has an impact on:
- the scholarship increases for research activities abroad (up to 50% of the amount of the scholarship);
- the budget allocated to research activities.
The increase in the scholarship amount also has a positive impact on unemployment benefits for doctoral students (DIS-COLL: monthly unemployment benefit - INPSOpen this link in a new windowOpen this link in a new window)

The programme is full-time and will be taught in English by members of the university’s multi-national faculty. No tuition fees are charged, and the scholarships are adequate to cover living expenses in Trento.
