The role
We’re looking for a Head of Communications (Research, Impact and Engagement) to develop and protect our reputation in world-leading research that makes a global impact. This role leads a team of communicators that bring the University of Bristol’s research to life and shares our research stories with audiences across the world across multiple platforms. With a strong focus on digital engagement and data-driven and audience insights, this role will advise, influence and build relationships with internal, external and media stakeholders. Leading a team of experts to help tell the story of Bristol through the lens of our brand, they will help define what our University is known for locally, nationally and globally. They will foster a culture of creativity and collaboration, while ensuring high-quality content delivery that aligns with the University’s strategic goals and reputation ambitions.
What will you be doing?
Lead a team of communications and digital specialists, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and direction needed to produce high-quality content. Translate priorities into objectives for the team and instil a customer-focused approach, giving clear sense of direction and purpose.
- Lead the creation and implementation of a comprehensive research news and content strategy that aligns with the University’s broader strategic objectives. Effectively manage resources to ensure value for money.
- Develop and execute a digital-first approach to Research and Impact and Engagement, identifying and promoting key experts as thought leaders and influencers. Leverage social media, blogs, and other digital platforms to enhance the visibility of projects and their impacts, positioning the University as a global thought leader.
- Help ensure control of the editorial process, developing content and stories that are compelling, accurate, and aligned with strategic priorities. Apply strong expert news judgment to identify stories with the potential for broad impact, shaping and pitching them effectively to media outlets and digital platforms.
- Proactively seek out and shape stories that align with the University’s strategic goals, ensuring positive media coverage and content to increase the visibility of the University’s activities.
You should apply if
- Expertise in storytelling, with a strong network of contacts to share the impact of the University of Bristol’s research with local, national, & global audiences.
- A passion for building reputation and brand, with a flair for digital storytelling.
- Experience managing teams in complex organisations, particularly during periods of change and transition.
- A data- and audience-driven approach to corporate communications, with proven success in strategy development and media campaign execution.
- Excellent communication skills, with a track record of strong stakeholder management - including senior leaders, external partners, & media.
- Experience as a trusted advisor, able to influence at all levels.
