The three academic Schools at AJU are the 1) Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies which offers an in-person MA in Rabbinic Studies, 2) the Masor School for Jewish Education with online early childhood education programming at the BA, MA, EdD, and Certificate levels, and 3) JewishU: Undergraduate Initiatives, which offers non-degree, online undergraduate Jewish Studies courses to high school teens and college students. AJU’s community programming and activities include online learning through the Whizin Center for Open Learning, and Introduction to Judaism through the Maas Center for Jewish Journeys, as well as additional community events.
Position Overview
American Jewish University invites applications for a contract Ethnic Studies Professor to instructionally design and teach its brand-new undergraduate-level ETH 105 – American Jewish Ethnic Studies in the asynchronous online modality. The professor should stive to integrate diverse ethnic studies perspectives—including intersections between Jewish studies, and other global ethnic traditions—to create a dynamic, interdisciplinary curricula.
Essential Duties Summary:
- Instructionally design the asynchronous undergraduate American Jewish Ethnic Studies in the University’s learning management system, with an emphasis on integrating perspectives from varying disciplines.
- Teach the asynchronous undergraduate American Jewish Ethnic Studies course for the first semester of launching the course (estimated 4 months of asynchronous teaching).
- Employ innovative, student-centered pedagogical approaches that engage a diverse student body and promote critical inquiry.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of undergraduate students.
- Regularly update course content to reflect current research, theoretical debates, and community issues relevant to ethnic studies.
Required Qualifications:
- A master's degree in the ethnic studies field, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution is required; Doctoral degree preferred.
- One year of online teaching experience at the post-secondary education level using a learning management system (LMS) (AJU uses Canvas by Instructure).
- Minimum of three years of direct teaching experience at the university level in your discipline.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Must have personal computer and ability to facilitate online instruction and communications remotely.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching in a similarly mission-driven academic environment.
- Experience in instructional design of online courses, preferably using the Canvas by Instructure Learning Management System (LMS).
- Experience in curriculum design for courses using LMS delivery.
