The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology offers a MS degree, three graduate certificates, BS degree, an accelerated BS/MS degree, and four minors – criminal justice, criminal law and legal process, criminology, and forensic science for crime scenes. We currently have 11 tenure-line faculty and 6 full-time instructors with research and teaching expertise in criminal justice, criminology, and law. The Department has the third largest number of majors in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. It provides students with a comprehensive educational experience, including exemplary academics and numerous extra-curricular opportunities. The graduate program is consistently recognized as an exemplar in online education by the US News & World Report and has been ranked the number one program in North Carolina for several years. Job Duties:
The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology invites applications for two 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor or Professor positions with expertise in community corrections, courts, juvenile justice, law enforcement, or related area to begin August 2025. The selected candidate will establish or continue a record of scholarly research and publication, the pursuit of external grants at the state and national level, effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and community engagement. The position requires teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, grant-seeking, active scholarship, and service to the department, university, and profession. This position is contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience:
A PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field, such as Justice Administration is required. However, ABD candidates may be considered. For ABD candidates, initial appointment will be at the probationary-term rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment. A JD (law degree) is not considered a terminal degree for this position. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
For appointment as an Associate Professor, candidates must fulfill the requirements of the appointment of Assistant Professor, including a conferred PhD, and demonstrate consistent achievements in research productivity, teaching, and professional service. For appointment as Professor, candidates must fulfill the requirements of the appointment of Associate Professor, including a conferred PhD, and demonstrate consistent effectiveness and excellence in teaching, a research agenda that is clearly focused with a significant publication record and established contribution to the fields of criminal justice and criminology, and significant service contributions. Applicants seeking tenure at initial appointment must have a distinguished and sustained record of teaching, research, and service, which meet criteria in the departmental unit code.
