For nearly 70 years, the Child Development & Educational Studies (CDES) department and Laboratory School at Fullerton College have provided leadership, education, and quality care to the early childhood profession, college students, and children throughout Orange County. Rooted in Social Constructivist pedagogy, we emphasize coursework that challenges students to address the unique learning styles of all children while valuing the diversity of their families. Our classes are designed to provide students with a strong theoretical foundation, as well as direct application of this knowledge with young children in our CDES Laboratory School.
We offer over 30 different courses, preparing both beginning teachers and seasoned professionals with the tools needed to meet the ongoing challenges of the early education field, in the classroom and beyond. Our CDES faculty and Laboratory School staff maintain a high level of professional involvement by participating in local, state, and national Child Development and Early Education organizations and provide ongoing professional development to school districts and private agencies. Job Description:Teach lower division courses in Child Development to a diverse student population.
Teaching assignments may include day, evening, Saturday, face-to-face, online (synchronous or asynchronous), hybrid, honors, and/or dual enrollment.
Instruct and assist in the retention and success of a diverse student population through careful preparation of course materials, sound teaching methodologies, and critical pedagogies that are particularly effective with students of color and first-generation college students.
Contribute to department service, including but not limited to participating in department meetings, curriculum development and maintenance, extra-curricular programming, capacity building, and department promotion.
Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.
Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.
Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.
Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.Work cooperatively with staff and students.
Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/ family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education
OR
Bachelor’s in any of the above
AND
Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/ home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies
OR
Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.
OR
The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.
Commitment to diversity. Desirable Qualifications:Knowledge of current innovative theories and practices such as Constructivism, Reggio inspired programming, the emergent learning approach and an anti-bias approach.
Evidence of the successful application of theories and practices in the field of early childhood education.
Demonstrated leadership in working successfully with teachers of young children, community college students, families, campus and district administrators, staff, university and college partners, and fellow faculty.
Demonstrated knowledge of the Reggio Emilia Approach, nature-based learning, and Social Constructivist teaching.
Experience working with college level practicum students and implementing emergent curricula that are Reggio-inspired, Social Constructivist, and supported by
Developmentally Appropriate Practices and the Preschool Learning Foundations.
Evidence of and willingness to participate in professional organizations and activities.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated sensitivity to working with community college students of diverse ages, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
