Overview
This project focuses on the development of novel synthetic methodologies that use light to deliver cyclic organic structures of relevance for drug discovery. In addition to being an abundant and sustainable energy source, using light to activate organic molecules opens up unconventional reactivity and selectivity profiles not encountered under thermal conditions. The project will explore a novel dual catalysis concept combining light activation with organocatalysis by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which shows huge promise for expanding the scope of organic photochemistry. In addition to synthetic organic chemistry, the project will also incorporate photophysical studies with further support from computational partners. Eligibility criteria
A minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed PhD project (such as mathematics or theoretical physics) is our standard entry, however we place value on prior experience, enthusiasm for research, and the ability to think and work independently. Excellent Analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements. A Masters qualification is not required if you have a minimum 2:1 degree or can evidence alternative experience in a work or research-based project.
