Coordinator of Transitional Programs (Grant-Funded Position)
New River Community College is a two-year state institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is in Virginia’s New River Valley, which is also home to two public universities, and which has earned widespread recognition for the quality of life offered to residents. The NRCC campus in Dublin and the college’s Christiansburg site provide modern, well-equipped facilities for the college’s career and technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs. The Coordinator of Transitional Programs is responsible for managing Adult Education programs as a unit within New River Community College serving the New River Valley (Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County and the City of Radford). Reporting to the Vice President for Workforce Development and External Relations, the Coordinator provides leadership and day-to-day management of instruction for adult learners in basic skills, preparation for obtaining the GED® credential, English language learning and related offerings that prepare individuals for college studies and/or career advancement.
Duties:
- Provide leadership and day-to-day management of Adult Education instruction and related activities in the New River Valley offered through funding from the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Adult Education and Literacy.
- Meet all reporting, fiscal management and policy/procedural requirements of the Virginia Department of Education OAEL, New River Community College and the Virginia Community College System.
- Complete proposals for grant funding in accordance with deadlines and requirements established by the Virginia Department of Education (and other funding sources, if applicable).
- Oversee the entry and maintenance of student data in accordance with state and college requirements and utilize data for program evaluation and improvement.
- Recruit, hire, supervise and provide professional development for teachers and other staff.
- Collaborate with public school divisions, state and local agencies, community-based organizations and other entities.
- Maintain current knowledge in adult education best practices and with applicable federal and state regulations and laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated experience in program coordination.
- Significant experience in working with adult students.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct comprehensive. educational programming for adults in multiple jurisdictions.
- Demonstrated capability for effective budget management.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adult learners, professional and support staff, state and local officials and external publics.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- High ethical standards with a commitment to excellence and integrity.
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Additional Considerations
Additional factors that may be considered include:
- Previous management experience in a postsecondary educational institution.
- Experience in grant proposal writing and/or grant management.
- Knowledge to meet policy and procedural requirements of the Virginia Department of Education, New River Community College and the Virginia Community College system.
- Knowledge of curriculum content and methods for instruction of adult learners related to GED and/or English language learning instruction.
