The University of Tampa seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the Vice President, Human Resources, and Chief Human Resources Officer (VPHR). This is an outstanding opportunity to establish a best-in-class strategic human resources organization to support a thriving community as the University builds on its strengths and anticipates its future. This position is open due to the upcoming retirement of the current Vice President, Donna Popovich, who has served as an integral member of The University of Tampa's community in a variety of roles for more than 40 years, cultivating a culture of care and support that has been deeply valued throughout an era of growth and innovation.
For 93 years, the University of Tampa (UTampa) has been committed to providing exceptional learning experiences in a global context. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre residential campus alongside the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa's dynamic downtown business and medical districts, which comprise a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. UTampa reflects this vibrancy with a talented student body of 11,429 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students drawn from all 50 states and most of the world's countries; a committed employee base of approximately 1,400 full- and part-time faculty and staff; and top-tier rankings in
U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, and
The Princeton Review. The University is a highly attractive destination for students seeking a distinctive, top-quality education with a strong liberal arts foundation that includes easy access to internships, community service, and outstanding recreational opportunities. UTampa's four-college model—the College of Arts and Letters, Sykes College of Business, College of Natural and Health Sciences, and College of Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Education—has helped the University retain its small-school ambiance and scholarly connections through high-growth, rapidly evolving, and ever-strong institutional trajectory.
The VPHR will join the University at a time of great excitement, momentum, and change. With the recent appointment of
President Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg and an ongoing institutional strategic planning process, the VPHR has the opportunity to collaborate with and support the President and other senior leaders in the development and implementation of a bold vision for the future of the University, building upon its successes and securing its place as an institution of national and global impact and reach. Emerging from this moment of transformation is the invitation to assess, evaluate, and reimagine how work is done across the University, including how support is delivered to its most valuable resources, its employees.
Reporting directly to President Dahlberg and serving as a member of the cabinet, the VPHR will be charged with building upon the strengths of the human resources organization to reimagine the role that HR plays within the organization and shape a people-centered vision and strategy that charts a path for the future and further establishes the function as a value-added, employee-focused, and strategic resource for the community. Areas of opportunity include but are not limited to building a programmatic and meaningful onboarding strategy, developing a robust career architecture for employees, establishing comprehensive learning and development opportunities for managers and staff at all levels, shaping an effective performance management program tied to benchmarked and transparent compensation program, creating a centralized repository for updated employee policies to support employees and managers and to ensure compliance and risk mitigation, and producing innovative and forward-thinking strategies and programs to engage employees at all levels.
The incoming VPHR will have the opportunity to serve as an institutional change agent, crafting a culture of excellence and agility and improving UTampa's organizational capacity to evolve, grow, and continuously change. The successful candidate will bring experience envisioning, designing, and implementing strategies to enhance the employee experience, possess an understanding of best practices, and have an eye for new possibilities and emerging challenges in the rapidly changing higher education environment. The key to this leader's success will be the ability to create policies, programs, and opportunities to meet the needs of today's UTampa employees and anticipate and prepare to meet tomorrow's workforce needs in support of the institution's strategic priorities.
The UTampa community seeks a leader who brings demonstrated experience advancing transformational change in complex mission-driven environments, who possesses broad human resources knowledge and expertise in delivering strategic consultative services to organizational leadership, and unquestionable integrity. Candidates who are able to exercise legal dexterity in their approach to policy development, compliance, and risk management are desired as state and federal laws and regulations evolve. Additionally, leaders who demonstrate active engagement in human resources professional networks and organizations in order to stay abreast of emerging trends, innovative solutions, and best practices are encouraged. At least 10 years of progressive leadership in human resources in a complex mission-driven environment and an earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education are required. Prior experience in higher education and a Juris Doctorate degree or master's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field is preferred, as is professional certification in the field of human resources.
