Job Summary
The College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks to
hire a collaborative, innovative, service-oriented person to lead
the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences.
Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Department Chair will
lead a faculty engaged in multi-faceted instructional programs at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels in teacher education,
special education, ESOL, technology and learning design, curriculum
and instruction, literacy, early childhood, and
elementary/secondary education in social studies, science, and
mathematics.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Provide vision, leadership, motivation, and supervision to the
department and its programs.
- Conduct personnel needs assessments and work with faculty and
staff to identify staffing needs, specialties, and expertise to
ensure relevant and excellent curricula and instruction.
- Ensure accreditation compliance with all state and federal
agencies relevant to each program area within the department.
- Ensures departmental compliance with college/school,
university, system, and state policies, rules, regulations,
programs, practices, and procedures.
- Foster a culture of research and scholarship, encouraging
faculty to engage in creative, scholarly, and research
activities.
- Evaluate and mentor faculty in areas of teaching, research, and
service, providing guidance for professional growth.
- Lead faculty and staff recruitment efforts, including creating
a comprehensive position marketing and recruitment plan and
coordinating the hiring process with Academic Affairs and
college/school leadership.
- Oversee curriculum development and program enhancement to
ensure the department remains at the cutting edge of educational
trends and technologies.
- Collaborates with Program Coordinator/Director and departmental
faculty members to make appropriate and timely revisions to
departmental degree programs, including prerequisites, required
courses, course learning goals, and course content; to propose new
degree programs; and to focus on assessment for continuous
improvement.
- Leads periodic complete curricular reviews for every degree
program within the department.
- Develops the departmental semester course teaching schedule in
consultation with departmental faculty and college/school
leadership. Ensures that the departmental course teaching schedule
fosters student learning and facilitates student graduation.
- Build and maintain external partnerships with local school
districts, professional organizations, and community stakeholders
to support program goals and student success.
- Collaborates with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and
community leaders (department stakeholders) to establish and
maintain a strategic vision for the department that is consistent
with the vision, mission, core values, and plans of the
college/school and University.
- Encourage professional development by facilitating
opportunities for faculty to attend conferences, workshops, and
training programs.
- Oversee student recruitment and retention initiatives,
collaborating with faculty to design programs that support student
academic success, advising, and mentoring.
- Prepare and submit required internal and external reports,
including accreditation documentation, faculty and staff
performance evaluations, and departmental reviews.
- Collaborates with staff and faculty to develop annual
departmental goals and objectives; provides the Dean with progress
reports for meeting departmental goals.
- Represent the department at college and university-wide
committees, contributing to the development of university policies
and initiatives.
- Develops and regularly monitors the departmental budget to
ensure fiscal accountability and effective resource management.
Understands and adheres to University policies and procedures
relating to the expenditure of University funds.
- Adheres to the articles, processes, and timelines regarding
faculty performance, evaluation, and promotion described in the
current College Framework, FGCU and United Faculty of Florida (UFF)
Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Faculty Performance
Evaluation Document (FPED).
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications
- Doctorate (Ed.D., Ph.D.) in Education, Curriculum and
Instruction, Higher Education, Learning Sciences, Instructional
Technology or closely related field.
- A record of teaching, scholarly, and service contributions that
merits appointment at the rank of Professor in an appropriate
academic discipline within the college.
- Experience as a college professor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a program coordinator or department chair.
- Documented work as a collaborative leader.
- Experience with curriculum development, accreditation, and
program evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and allocate resources
effectively.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Appointment will be made at an out-of-unit faculty rank
commensurate with the candidate's experience on a 12-month
out-of-unit multi-year appointment basis beginning as early as in
January 2025.
